Microsoft’s updated Surface Book 2 is 3 times more powerful than the predecessor

Yesterday was a special day for Microsoft and its fans. The software giant released a major update of the Fall Creators Update for Windows 10, sent customers the first batch of the VR headsets for the Windows Mixed Reality platform, and introduced the new, second generation of the Surface Book laptop.

Originally, the first Surface Book was released in 2015. Since then, there were rumors that the company postponed the release of devices of this line until 2018, so yesterday’s announcement was quite unexpected. Although there are no obvious external changes to Surface Book 2, the update mostly touched the hardware component. In this case, the laptop is now presented in two versions - with 13.5 and 15-inch screens.

The 13-inch Surface Book 2 received a display with a resolution of 3000 × 2000 pixels. The basic configuration features a seventh generation dual-core Intel Core i5-7300U, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD-drive. In the expanded version of the laptop can be installed eighth generation four-core Core i7-8650U, 16 GB of RAM, a drive up to 1 TB and a discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card with 6GB of graphics memory. According to Microsoft, the current Surface Book is three times more powerful than its predecessor. The starting price of the updated laptop is $ 1,499. Customers will have to pay a total price of $ 1,999 for the version with an external graphics adapter.

In the case of the second modification of Surface Book 2, the manufacturer does not provide you with a choice of configuration. The device has a 15-inch display with a resolution of 3240 × 2160 pixels, an Intel Core i7- 8650U processor, 16GB of RAM, a 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB SSD drive and a discrete GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of memory. In this version, Microsoft claims a fivefold increase in performance compared to the original model. The price of the 15-inch Surface Book 2 starts at $ 2,499.

The contrast ratio in both cases is 1600: 1. There is also support for Surface Dial. It is also worth noting the presence of backlit keyboard in both versions, an 8-megapixel camera on the back side and a 5-megapixel camera on the front of the laptop. On board the laptop is an SD memory card slot and two USB ports. Surface Book 2 finally has a USB Type-C port, but this is a USB 3.1 Gen 1, not Thunderbolt 3. That is, the data rate will be 5 Gbit/s instead of the possible 40 Gb/s. Notebooks still have a Surface Connect connector, which is used for charging. The battery capacity is not reported yet, but the manufacturer promises up to 17 hours of battery life in laptop mode and up to 5 hours in tablet mode.

Both versions of Microsoft Surface Book 2 will go on sale in a month, on November 16 to be exact. Applications for pre-orders will be accepted starting from November 9.

Microsoft also introduced a PC mouse for professionals called Surface Precision Mouse. It allows you to work simultaneously with three computers. The accessory will be released this fall for a price of $99.
